William (Bill) Heffernan was born in Rochester, New York but moved to Miami, Florida at age 2. He grew up in Miami Shores attended Archbishop Curley High School and then the University of Pennsylvania Wharton School of Commerce and Finance where he obtained a Bachelors Degree of Science in Economics.
Mr. Heffernan entered banking in 1973 when he joined The First National Bank of Miami (later to become Southeast Banking Corp) in 1973 as a management trainee. He rose to the level of Vice President and Branch Manager of the One Biscayne Tower Branch in Miami. He left there in 1980 to join Plaza Bank of Miami as a Director and Executive Vice President. In 1991 Plaza Bank was sold to a group from Venezuela and he then joined TotalBank in Miami as its President and CEO. TotalBank was a two bank holding company that also owned Trade National Bank. In 1996 the banks were merged into one and he became President and CEO of the combined entity. In 1997 the Bank acquired Universal National Bank and in 1998 it acquired Florida International Bank of Miami. In 1998 the three banks with assets totaling $500 million merged into one bank with 10 locations. In 2007 after growing to 15 locations and $2 Billion in assets, TotalBank was purchased by Banco Popular Español from Madrid, Spain.
In September of 2009, Mr. Heffernan retired from the Bank at the expiration of his two year contract. In 2010 he joined Procacci Development Corporation as President.
Mr. Heffernan has been involved civically for many years. He was the Mayor of Miami Shores from 1993 -95 and served on the Miami Shores Council from 1993-1997. He has been a trustee of Doctors Charter School of Miami Shores since 1996, serving as Chairman of the Board from 1996-2009. He was formerly the Chairman of the Archdiocese of Miami Education Foundation, Treasurer of the North Dade Medical Foundation and a Board Member of the Florida Banker’s Association from 1998-2009. He is currently Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Barry University.
Mr. Heffernan is married to Kathleen and they have four children and three grandchildren. They reside in Miami, Florida.
